‘Freeing Europe safely from asbestos’ Conference

Today, the author of this blog attended the ‘Freeing Europe Safely From Asbestos’ conference at the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) in Brussels. The event was an opportunity to discuss the continuing widespread risk of asbestos exposure to Europe’s citizens and the steps that need to be taken to reduce it over the coming years.

The programme included presentations from employers’ and workers’ representatives and debates with policy makers on topics which ranged from appropriate policy choices, strategies for safe removal, the recognition and compensation of victims, as well as appropriate actions to protect the public health of Europe’s population.

The joint conference has been hosted by the EESC and the Committee of the Regions (CoR), with the support of The European Federation of Building and Wood Workers (EFBWW), together with the employers’ organisation European Construction Industry Federation and victim support groups.

This event is a follow-up action to the EESC’s Opinion on Asbestos, which was published in February. In order to protect public health, the EESC Opinion urges the European Commission to develop action plans for asbestos removal and management.
